Considering Solar? Make Your House More Efficient First

Elon Musk and his Tesla electric cars, solar panels, and battery pack Powerwalls sure have created a lot of buzz around going solar. California has become a hotbed for the technological advances in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems of the last ten years. You may have even seen that deep blue glare shining off of one of your neighbor’s recently installed solar system and thought, “Can I run my home off of solar? How many solar panels do I need?”

We can’t blame you —  who wouldn’t want to save on energy costs by supplementing their electricity needs with the renewable power of the California sun? But if your home is already wasting energy through inefficient HVAC equipment, inadequate insulation, or even structural holes and gaps that are allowing air to infiltrate your living space, then the electricity your new solar system is generating would be going to waste!

The Whole-Home Approach

It’s been over 25 years since California Energy Services started taking the whole-home approach to increasing the energy efficiency and year-round comfort of homes in El Dorado Hills and the surrounding areas. While we also install solar PV systems, we have found that true energy conservation needs to start inside the home.

Our whole home approach looks at how each of the systems in your home affect each other. For example, upgrading a home’s insulation may keep heat from escaping a home through the walls; but if there is not a proper air seal in the structure of that home, then hot air will easily slip outside through holes and gaps in building materials. This places more strain on your heating system, leading to increased wear and tear and higher heat related energy bills.

Understanding Your Home Performance with an Energy Audit

There are many indicators of how your home is performing, many of them invisible to the naked eye. This is where an energy audit is most helpful. An energy audit from a local (yes, local is important!) home performance contractor utilizes the latest in diagnostic technology to show you where your home is most in need of upgrades, and how each system is performing in relation to the whole home. Blower door tests will uncover how airtight your home is; infrared cameras locate problem areas in your walls, attic and crawl space insulation; and a thorough check of your HVAC equipment will expose any inefficiencies and necessary maintenance.

With an energy audit from California Energy Services, we will also provide a comprehensive report, using energy modeling software to recommend which efficiency upgrades will have the greatest impact based on your goals and budget. These upgrades can include:

  • Air sealing

  • Cellulose or spray foam insulation

  • HVAC service or repair

  • Duct sealing
